Try these links, It will be much easier in a new installation. If you are remodeling you may have to tear out a whole wall. These links are pretty general, but explain it fairly well. 'party_hard_l...' has a very good answer about codes as well.

If you do install your own make sure you get the appropriate cut sheet for your particular tub/shower.How do you install a one piece bath tub - shower?
Call 1800bathfitters and pay them to do it!
it is best to contact a professional when installing any fixtures in your home but there are a few guidlines you need to follow if you do decide to do it yourself. First you need to be sure you have a wall frame around the spot the tub is going to sit. This allows for support for the fiberglass/ acrylic backing the shower is made of. The rest is pretty simple with most one peice bath combo's, such as the ones commonly sold at Home Depot or Lowes. The shower comes with nailing flanges that you can use to attach to the studs. Some showers need a morter base poured down to allow for a firm and smooth base. Like I said, it is best to contact a professional to do these jobs. They know your local and state codes and will be sure that everything is done right.

hope this helps. You can also get help at most big box stores such as home depot, lowes or menards
